But there is no shortage of things to do as the eight-day Waimea Town Celebration kicked off on Saturday with admission-needed events like the Cocktails &Cuisine featuring the Koloa Rum Company, and the King Kaumuali‘i Lu‘au on Sunday featuring Kumu Hula Troy Hinano Lazaro and Halau Ka Pa Hula o Hinano.
The free 99 events start Tuesday with Music in the Park with the Times Supermarket Spam Musubi Eating Contest, on Wednesday, the Redondo’s Red Hot Dog Eating Contest and on Thursday the Kaua‘i Kim Chee Kim Chee Eating Contest.
The last of the free Waimea Town Celebration events starts on Friday from 5 p.m. for the Ho‘olaule‘a, which takes place under the shadow of the old mill. It continues on Saturday with the Super Duper Ice Cream Eating Contest at noon, the Scotty’s Music ‘Ukulele Contest starting at 1 p.m. and glimpses of the Long Distance Canoe races, the Lei Papale, or Hat lei, contest, and lots of ono grinds from local vendors before the nighttime concert lineup that starts at 5 p.m.
