MAUI — According to score sheets sent along by Masayo Sutton of The Maui News, Kaua‘i High School baseball took a 7-1 win over Lahainaluna High School and Kapa‘a High School dropped a 2-6 contest to the Baldwin Bears during a pre-season baseball tournament played on Friday on the Valley Isle.
Kapa‘a suffered the loss on the hill when its hurlers — Bob Manintin and Kaith Mundon gave up six runs on five hits through six innings of work.
The Warriors also picked up five hits on the Baldwin pitching staff, but could only capitalize on two scores. Leading Kapa‘a hitter in the loss goes to catcher Makoa Chong, who finished by scoring once, while nailing a double that scored one run.
Kaua‘i pushed four runs across in the first inning and added scores in the third, fourth and fifth innings, while allowing a run to Lahainaluna in the fifth frame.
Brennan Bermudes was one of two Red Raider pitches handling mound chores in the win. Bermudes finished by throwing two innings with no runs allowed on one hit given up, while walking three and striking out one. Cyrus Fujimoto threw for three innings with one run allowed, giving up three hits, walking one batter and striking out three hitters. He also hit three batters with pitches.
Top Red Raider hitters included Aukai Arruda, who was 3-for-3 in the box and scoring twice. He nailed an Run Batted In on a two-bagger. Eric Pereira was 2-for-3 in the box and marked an RBI.
Other teams participating in the tournament include King Kekaulike, a 6-5 winner over Punahou School, and Maui High School, a 7-2 winner over PAC-5, and Kamehameha Schools-Maui who was a 1-0 winner over Punahou.
According to information published by The Maui News on Monday, the teams were participating in the 47th annual Maui High School Preseason Baseball Tournament at Maehara Stadium from Thursday through Saturday.
Kaua‘i High School dropped 2-0 to host Maui High on Thursday before rebounding to a 7-1 win over Lahainaluna in five innings on Friday. The Red Raiders dropped a 5-4 contest to Kamehameha Schools-Maui on Saturday to finish the tournament with a win and two losses.
Kapa‘a High School opened the tournament with a 3-2 win over Kamehameha Schools on Thursday before falling 6-2 to Baldwin on Friday. The Warriors from up on the hill finished their Maui Tour with two wins and a loss following their 12-7 victory over King Kekaulike in five innings on Saturday.
According to the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation baseball schedule, Waimea High School will be hosting a baseball tournament starting on Feb. 29 through March 2. No other details were available.
