PRINCEVILLE — The North Shore Give, a community foundation, presented $15,000 in awards to five schools for their respective health and fitness projects from a portion of the proceeds generated by the recent ‘Ohana Fit Fest.
Hanalei Elementary School, the Kilauea Elementary School, Kaua‘i Christian Academy, Kaua‘i Homeschool Now and Kanuikapono Public Charter School were recipients of awards.
“Giving grants to schools for health-focused programs is our way of encouraging children to live healthy and active lives,” said Ken Rosenthal, a North Shore Give board member, who is the chair of its Health &Wellness Committee and the ‘Ohana FitFest event director.
“The event coming up on Sept. 28 is the 11th anniversary of ‘Ohana FitFet, and we hope to continue this event for many more years so we can continue to inspire people of all ages to be active, and support nonprofits with grants for health and fitness projects.”
Hosted and presented by North Shore Give, the ‘Ohana FitFest is an annual family-friendly obstacle fun run that spans the Prince Albert Park in Princeville, the community’s shared-use path, and the makai holes of the Makai Golf Club.
During the run (or walk) through the course, participants negotiate climbs, crawls, and test their coordination on obstacles such as the pallet climb, “spider web” and slip-and-slide.
These challenges draw residents and visitors of all ages with a portion of the proceeds being donated back to nonprofit groups for health and wellness programs.
“Healthy community members are at the heart of a thriving community,” said North Shore Give President Stefan Swanepoel. “We created the ‘Ohana FitFest event to reinforce fitness activities that can be a lot of fun at the same time.”
North Shore Give is the “dba” for the 501 (c) (3) charitable nonprofit Kaua‘i North Shore Community Foundation, a catalyst that responds to community needs by igniting action, mobilizing volunteers and raising funds.
The foundation serves donors by putting their philanthropy to work in the community, connects nonprofits, donors and other organizations to solve community challenges, and provides a hub for sharing information with the community.
