HANAPEPE — Hanapepe Public Library announced in celebration of Chinese New Year, which falls on Feb. 10, the Hawai‘i State Public Library System will present an Erhu talk and recital by Dr. Sun Hui on Feb. 8 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hanapepe Public Library’s meeting room.
HANAPEPE — Hanapepe Public Library announced in celebration of Chinese New Year, which falls on Feb. 10, the Hawai‘i State Public Library System will present an Erhu talk and recital by Dr. Sun Hui on Feb. 8 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hanapepe Public Library’s meeting room.
This is a free performance with light refreshments being served through the courtesy of the Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library. Intended for families, and all ages, an RSVP can be found on the website www.librarieshawaii.org/events/dr-sun-hui-erhu-musician/.
Hui is the winner of Na Hoku Hanohano Award 2018 and Excellence Prize Winner of the National Erhu Competition in Taiwan, Champion of National Taichi Competition in Taiwan.
Dr. Sun Hui has developed a unique style, combining the Chinese elements of the erhu with traditional Hawaiian music.
The erhu is a two-stringed bowed instrument sometimes known in the Western world as the Chinese two-stringed fiddle. It is older than the violin.
Dr. Sun Hui will play the erhu and discuss the historical context for the instrument’s role in Chinese classical music composition, poetry and philosophy.
During the talk, Dr. Sun Hui will present about this most popular of the Chinese huqin family of bowed string instruments that is evocative of China.
Funding for this program is being provided by the Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library with travel expenses to Kaua‘i made possible through the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa’s Outreach College Statewide Cultural Extension Program.
