LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School surged to a 68-50 win over Island School and Kapa‘a High School, the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation (KIF) boys basketball first round title holder, lost to Waimea High School, 74-72 in triple overtime on Saturday.
Trailing the Menehune, 27-17 at the break on the courts at Bernice Hundley Gym, the Warriors surged to a second half performance to knot the contest, 49-49 at the end of regulation play.
Following the two overtime periods, where each team matched each other in scoring, Waimea pulled off an 11-9 scoring performance in the third overtime for the final 2-point margin, according to ScoringLive.com.
Kelani Lewis led Waimea with 16 points, including a pair of 3-balls. Mykah Brun and Daniel Kaohelaulii-Kala followed with 14 points apiece. Kameron Lee, a player who formerly played for Island School, helped with 10 points, including a pair of 3-balls.
Keaka Kauhane topped the Warrior scoring with a game-high 20 points, including a trio of treys. His efforts were helped by Tristen Scully, who dumped five 3-balls for 15 points. Austin Green made two appearances at the foul line. He dropped one and added 18 additional points for a 19-point contribution.

Waimea takes the lead in the second round with a 2-win record.
With the results, Kapa‘a drops to one win, one loss in the KIF second round, tying with Kaua‘i High School, losing to Kapa‘a during the second round opener, who won their Saturday match against Island School.
The Red Raiders, playing at home, played close to Island School to a 25-22 lead at the break where fans were treated to a special guest performance by the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School creative arts program students who, while not performing, joined the Red Raiders cheer squad in cheering the Red Raider players.
Rolling behind the scoring of Joshua Rego, Reese Jenkins and Camren Holt-Ho, the Red Raiders surged to 17 points in the third stanza while holding the Voyagers to just five marks led by Lucas Summerhays, who bucketed four of his game-high 35 points in the stanza.
Overall, Summerhayes dropped five treys toward his game total that included 20 points falling in the fourth quarter Voyagers comeback effort. Voyager Aiden Alvarez added eight points, and Garrett Hadley ended with six points.
Rego topped the Red Raiders’ win on 28 points, including a pair of 3-balls and a crowd-pleasing dunk in the opening frame. He got help from Jenkins and Barkley Gillman, who each finished with nine points, and Holt-Ho who ended the night with seven points.
Kaua‘i High School Junior Varsity completed the Red Raiders sweep in a 49-31 win over the Voyagers behind 20 points dropped by Karter Riechle, including a pair of treys. Nickolas Gandez finished with nine points. Ty Camacho added eight points.
Piko Vaughn led the JV Voyagers effort with 16 points, followed by Kade McCracken adding nine points and Jonathan Primeaux adding five points.
KIF boys basketball continues on Tuesday when Kaua‘i High School visits Waimea High School at Clem Gomes Gym and Island School hosts Kapa‘a at Wilcox Gymnasium. The JV games at both sites start at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity contests to follow.
