LIHU‘E — During the last Kaua‘i Quilt Show held at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center, the Pop Up Quilt Boutique was open for limited service.
“This year, the Quilt Boutique will be in a separate pop-up shop like it was last year,” said Beverly Gotelli, a Quilt Show volunteer. “The Quilt Boutique will be open the same hours as the Kaua‘i Quilt Show.”
Sponsored by the Kaua‘i Quilt Guild, Nene Quilters, Vicky’s Fabrics in Kapa‘a and the Discount Fabric Warehouse in Lihu‘e, the Quilt Show will run from Feb. 9 through 21 at KSA gallery and separate pop up site. People can visit the exhibition daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission.
There are more than 120 quilts to go through that have been provided by 55 individual quilters. Attendees will have an opportunity to cast their “Viewer’s Choice” ballots while viewing the quilts.
Lesley Morris with her heart-themed “Heart & Soul” earned First Place during the 2023 Kaua‘i Quilt Show. Lea Ingram earned Second Place with “Melia Moon” and Vicky Masuoka took Third Place with “Traditional Hawaiian Applique.”
Quilts and other hand-crafted items will be available in the Quilt Boutique, including crocheted bowls, sewn bag, and more. Proceeds from the boutique will be shared with Kaua‘i nonprofit organizations.
“Last year, we had more than 3,000 people come through the show,” said Lea Ingram, one of the Kaua‘i Quilt Show contributors. “We raised more than $10,000 that were given out to Kaua‘i nonprofit organizations. This year, we have 60 designated Donation Quilts whose sales benefit the Kaua‘i nonprofit groups.”
A complete list of the Kaua‘i nonprofits benefiting from the Quilt Show will be available at KSA gallery when the show opens on Feb. 9 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.
Each year, more than 300 quilt block kits are handed out at the exhibit and sale to attendees. The block kits are completed and returned to be used in the following year’s donation quilts.
A new facet at this year’s Quilt Show are the quilting, crafts, including Hawaiian cultural appliques, “Make and Take” mini workshops that will be ongoing at the boutique location.
“We’ll have sewing machines for people in the workshop to use,” said Vicky Masuoka of Vicky’s Fabrics. “The mini workshops are being sponsored by Vicky’s Fabrics and the Discount Fabric Warehouse. We’re each providing three sewing machines each for the workshop participants to use. Erika Hessheimer of Discount Fabric Warehouse is even teaching one of the workshops.”
There is a nominal fee to cover costs of material for the series of workshops. A complete listing of the mini workshops can be found online at www.Eventbrite.com, and searching for Kaua‘i Quilt Show.
