This is the week before Christmas (final week before Winter Break) and a lot of things are happening at Pau Hana Market on Monday when the organizers of the Spirit of Giving food drive wrap up the food drive that started in early December. Everyone is still able to donate canned goods or cash to the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i in exchange for coupons that must be used that day for purchases at the market.

Lorena Silva, of Opu Road Farms, will have the New Year’s kadomatsu displays since Monday falls within the allowed time kadomatsu can be sold. Chef Steven Nakata and the Kaua‘i Community College culinary arts students will also showcase their culinary skills by offering Maluhia Cattle Company Beef Smash Burger Salad, and Kaua‘i Shrimp Lettuce Wraps.
Amy Chun said this is the last market for this year because Christmas falls on a Monday, and the market will be closed. But, the market returns on New Year’s Day to welcome the first Monday of 2024.
Of course, Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation opens its Outrigger Canoe Paddling season on Saturday with the first long distance race at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor. Saturday is also the Waimea Twilight Christmas parade that is on a paniolo theme with special guests performing in the area of Hofgaard Park where a replica of the old sugar mill has risen in the stage area … don’t forget to stop in on the Friends of the Waimea Public Library craft fair that starts at 2 p.m.
