PO‘IPU — A Po‘ipu man suffered critical injuries when he crashed a moped on a stretch of Kiahuna Plantation Drive on Thursday morning.
“The crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. when a 54-year-old Po‘ipu man operating a moped was heading east on Kiahuna Plantation drive and apparently lost control,” the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) said.
“Firefighters from the Koloa fire station and AMR (American Medical Response) medics arrived on-scene and treated the man before transporting him to Wilcox Medical Center (in Lihu‘e). He was later medevaced to O‘ahu for further treatment, where he remains in critical condition.”
The KPD said the man, whose name was not released, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Speed does not appear to be a contributing factor at this time. Toxicology results are pending.
The crash closed one lane of Kiahuna Plantation Drive for approximately two hours, while the KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation into the crash. The crash investigation remains ongoing.
