Both Captain Cole with Holoholo Charters, and Captain J-Sea with Blue Dolphin Charters reported “first sightings” of whales in emails on Monday morning, Oct. 9, 2023. “Capt. Cole with Holo Holo Charters was the first one who confirmed a whale sighting for the season, and took first pics,” said Kit Furderer of Holo Holo Charters on Monday morning. “Capt. J-Sea was stoked, as were the passengers,” said Lori Barrett of Blue Dolphin Charters of the sighting off Kokole Point on Sunday evening, Oct. 8, 2023.

No, Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami, I don’t think The Happy Camper is related to Suo Oshima Mayor Kiyotaka Fujimoto, who was on Kaua‘i to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Suo Oshima and County of Kaua‘i “sister island” relationships.
Kudos to Nalani Brun, Michelle Rego and the Kaua‘i Economic Development staff for coordinating the reaffirmation ceremony (even had dinner by County Council Vice Chair Kipukai Kuali‘i’s brother and company) that was blessed with the appearance of Kumu Hula Troy Hinano Lazaro (he said he won the Mokihana Festival hula competition along with his strong showing at a Maui competition) whose aloha was on point. It was a good thing we didn’t have Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball or we would have been short some Japanese dance performers.
More kudos to Todd Ozaki on being selected to create the commemorative gift from the County of Kaua‘i to celebrate the reaffirmation of sister city relationships, and kudos to Mayor Fujimoto for the generosity in passing out omiyage to everyone present at the ceremony … now, what happened to the Kaua‘i-grown rice?
In the meantime, Janice Bond was late to the October being Blind Equality Achievement Month sign waving because she craved flying saucers (wait until the weekend and Stan’s shows up at the Central Pacific Bank parking lot) … don’t forget the Lions Clubs’ Zone Social on Saturday that bangs with the Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity community health fair at the Kaua‘i Philippine Cultural Center … guess Rebecca Carnate will not be at the Zone Social.
OK, time to go check out Edwin Vea and The Beach House Craft Fair with 50 vendors at 9 a.m. in Po‘ipu.
