LIHU‘E — Andrew Sadamitsu of Kaua‘i High School marked the best boys score and Zoey Ruiz of Waimea High School posted the best girls score at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air rifle matches at the Kaua‘i High School range on Saturday.
Those marks were good enough to lead the Red Raider boys and Menehune girls to the top spots of their respective divisions at the tournament, which took on a modified format closer to what is shot at the state tournament.
According to Waimea Range Director Vincent Freeman, all four schools fielded four shooters per gender in a three-position by 20 shot format, meaning each shooter fires 20 shots at a target in each position, compared with the traditional 10 shots at a target in each position.
Freeman said the top scoring four-shooter team by gender will earn four points, while the second, third, and fourth place teams will earn three, two, and one point, respectively, toward the KIF championship.
Under the new format, Sadamitsu finished just four points ahead of fellow Red Raider Jacob Andres, who ended the day with 516 points.
On the girls range, Ruiz ended with 518 points or eight points ahead of second place finisher Lee Ann Saniatan, who finished with 510 points after Ruiz out-pointed Saniatan in the prone position, 183-174. Saniatan outscoring Ruiz by a point in the standing position.
Similarly on the boys course, Kaua‘i’s Andres out-pointed Sadamitsu in the prone and kneeling positions before falling in the standing position.
The KIF shooters will meet at the Island School range starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association 2023 Championships take place on Oct. 31 at the Neal Blaisdell Center on O‘ahu.
