October is a busy month and a test of good time management for those families and individuals wanting to maximize participation in as many events as humanly possible … don’t forget, Sunday is the 31st year the Ki-ho‘alu Foundation is presenting the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival at Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall for a $20 donation — a portion goes to the Hawai‘i Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund to help people and families impacted by the Aug. 8 wildfires.

Sponsored by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority with support from the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau, the concert is a great opportunity to listen and enjoy the sound of Paul Togioka (didn’t he say he was retiring?), Cindy Combs (haven’t seen or heard her traveled autographed guitar since Hanapepe Art Night time), Kupaoa (that’s Kellen and Lihau Paik), and many more ki ho‘alu or slack key musicians like Michael Keale, and another Michael, Michael Ka‘awa.
Next Saturday, we have the big test when the Parks and Recreation Department hosts the annual Senior Craft Fair at Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center (how many people will be lined up with their soda trays at 8:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. opening?) and the Matsuri event (you gotta register early to participate in the Comic Con costume contest!) at the convention hall.
At noon, Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity opens the doors to the Kaua‘i Philippine Cultural Center (how many people still don’t know it’s across the Safeway Hokulei Village shopping center) for a community health fair, which is the same time as the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation football game at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex.
The only break is the Kaua‘i Chocolate and Coffee Festival is on Sunday (Oct. 15) starting at 10 a.m. at Kilohana.
