LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School junior varsity girls volleyball coach Mai’lika Napoleon said the look of disbelief and astonishment on their faces was indescribable when they first walked into the newly minted Kaua‘i High School gym on Friday.
“It was kind of the look you give when you walk into state competition for the first time,” Napoleon said. “It’s like being somewhere else than a gym.”
Kapa‘a High School was the Kaua‘i High School opponent for the first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation competition, a girls volleyball matchup on Friday in the gym that doubles the capacity of the former gym at 1,627. A member of the school’s administration announced plans to hold Kaua‘i High School’s graduation for the Class of 2024 in the new facility.
Kaua‘i High School Athletic Director Keli‘i Morgado, during the small blessing of the gym earlier in the month, said the heart of the facility is the action scoreboard that was sponsored by retired General Myron Dobashi and retired educator Jean Dobashi, and their family.
Senate President Ron Kouchi said the new gym represents expanded opportunities for not just Kaua‘i High School, but the island as a whole, noting that there are talks with the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa about bringing over regular — versus exhibition — games in sports like men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball.
With the completion of the $21 million facility, it puts Kaua‘i into having more state level high school competitions, as well as other events such as concerts. This was demonstrated with the presence of the Kaua‘i High School band, which set up in the upper tiers of the bleachers and remained at the contest until the end.
The audience which turned out for the KIF girls volleyball game between Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a was not limited in age, ranging from younger keiki still in elementary school to kupuna that benefited from the Americans With Disabilities Act features in the gym’s architecture.
“This is so trippy,” said Kapa‘a High School varsity coach Tori Tuttle, who grew up playing ball in the network of gyms similar to Bernice Hundley Gym. “Coaching? No, I want to play in here.”
Kaua‘i High School extended mahalo to a long list of people helping to make Friday night happen. The list included Kouchi, Tokioka, Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) Superintendent Keith Hayashi, HIDOE Assistant Superintendent Randall Tanaka, Kaua‘i Area Complex Superintendent Daniel Hamada, Kaua‘i Board of Education member William “Bill” Arakaki and Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, who graduated from Kaua‘i High School.
The list also included former principals Linda Tanoe Smith and Anne Kane, Kaua‘i High School Foundation, Myong Choi of Bowers &Kubota, Conrad Murashige of Shioi Construction, Architects Lori Takeyama-Goshi and Mayumi Dao Hara of John Hara and Associates, Steven Macklin and Benjamin Sons, the Project Consultants, Seiji Yotsuda of American Electric, Information Technology Manager Byron Kapali, Farmer Administrative Services Assistant Lynn Antonio, Foreman for Shioi Construction Russell Chow, DOE Project Coordinator Arnold Fukunaga, Eric Agena and Kent Tomimoto of the Department of Accounting and General Service.
You were a flunk out high school student. You lived with your parents in Lihue. You made no income off politics your whole career. Now you have credit for an ugly gym? Ridiculous accolades you athletes have. Poor man still and made no difference in the real business world. Truth. 1975 grad. Or failure still yet.
At least the locals has people to represent them. I don’t want to sound like a spoil brat, but I hope you kids graduate. Because the politics who gave you guys this gym, all failed high school and not worth anything to the business community.

All played in the old gym at KHS. In High School. So now they want politics? That really are the laughing stock of the business world.
I’m from the business community. So I know business. You guys are athletics. The people who represent you are athletics. Not business.
So one thing to know, I hope you do graduate. Because the men I just wrote down, ain’t worth anything to Kauai business world or anywhere else.
I also saw where they were going with athletics. Kauai High School gym is local. So taxes are local. However, the new Aloha Stadium at Manoa is not local. They have already billed the public. DAGS. Chris Kinimaka. And Kaua’i and local HHSAA sports will be affected. Your parking fees in town have gone up. Due to sports. The handivan have gone up.
These county councilmen are not getting paid an income. What the **** are you doing here?
That’s my question for any athletics who failed high school and now want politics in their life. What use are they and no income .
Several points missing in these people’s tenure
1. No diploma or college degree to show for
2. No income to show for paying any bills or income from a legitimate source . Ie. DOF
3. No experience to anyone. DOH, DOT, DOF. No experience in government
4. No public interest on them. The election is not a good measure
5. Propaganda. These men are using the public’s interest in just one area. Sports. The business community is not buying any of their tactics in government. Example food drive
These are good points when pointing out their phoney ways in public. Stealing money from the community are them.
I’ll be watching closely to the finances on athletics. Because they’re all failures the politicians.
Just letting the financial public know who is in office. Politics. And that goes for the new Waimea High School gym they wanted.
I can name all the politicians since 1976, who made no difference on Kauai. This airport is over due. The captains are laughing at Lihue. Coming left side of Nawailiwili harbor. Far left to Ace hardware store and landing the airplane. Not a normal approach. Tax wise, Kauai sucks. Don’t got it.
I’m for Los Angeles. Business wise. And the airport there. This is one flaw Kauai has.
No way. I just came from Costco in Puhi. The $21 million is not paid off. They billed the public. $19.50 / hour workers now hiring at Costco. On the new gynasium. Kauai HS.
I want to point out to Lihue public where the failures are coming from. The names.

All these politicians played sports. And just billed the public because they are failures and stupid people.
Thank You!
I was watching Olelo. And closely watching what the county councilmen was discussing. Water supply on the island. I’m not sure what those men Mel Rapozo, Billy Decosta, Bernard Carvalho, have to do with the Dept of water. Because they should be talking about how tourism can be welcomed back to Kaua’i. They failed high school. I’m the senior project manager. I’m not giving one penny to the county councilmen. So I don’t know where their input is important. One note. Not one penny to them is being paid.
Do you know why nothing gets done in the community? Like a new airport. Or more tourist coming to Kaua’i.
Facts!
I shop at Costco a lot. I am not into high school life. I have been out of the life for many years now. I am into business. High school life doesn’t affect us. They building a gym for the kids is just that, the kids.
I hope the politicians know this. And not tax the public. I see only 10% of the population involved in high school life. The rest don’t care. I hope they see it this way too. Funding coming from the state or federal is just that. Not place athletics on a pedal stool and make it king. Because it brings in no income for me. I’m the 90% others not into sports. Please think if you’re into sports. We’re not interested.
Here’s is a picture of one of your county council in high school playing football. Getting no pay.
