Bob Heyn
Robert Bunsen Heyn passed away peacefully on Sept. 7, 2023. He was born on Aug. 28, 1932, in Los Angeles, California. He is a graduate of U.C.L.A, Northwestern and Harvard University with a Master’s Degree in Business and Journalism. Before retirement, Bob was Marketing Director of several worldwide corporations.
After retiring, Bob moved from his family home on Lido Isle in Newport Beach to Princeville, Kaua‘i, to build his dream home with his Swedish born wife Ulla. During the course of their marriage, they traveled to many countries and were on the first major ship to cruise the Amazon River from the ocean mouth to Manaus, Brazil.
In addition to being predeceased by his wife Ulla and son-in-law Steve, he is preceded in death by his parents, H. Bunsen Heyn and Mildred Beverly Ahrens of San Marino and Newport Beach. His maternal grandparents were Edward Frederick Ahrens, Sr. and Ida May Kiefer of Hancock Park and El Monte. On his father’s side, he was related to his great uncle, Robert von Bunsen of Heidelberg, Germany, famed inventor of the Bunsen Burner and many scientific inventions now used in hospitals and industries throughout the world. His other great uncle was Baron von Bunsen, the German Ambassador to Queen Victoria for over 10 years and to the Pope in Rome.
As a hobby, Bob was a painter of Kaua‘i landscapes, and loved gardening, collecting art, and traveling. For many years he was an active Tour Guide at Grove Farm Museum, National Tropical Botanical Garden, Limahuli Garden and Preserve and Na Aina Kai Gardens. He was also President of the Kaua‘i Orchid Society and a national director for the Navy League.
He loved life, fine dining and meals with family and friends. He planned parties and events with meticulous detail and great panache. His passion for life and enthusiasm radiated in every endeavor. His wide circle of friends, his family and his beloved pets (dachshunds Lulu and Sweet Sue) gave him great joy.
Bob will be missed by all who knew him – he was a kind, gentle, intelligent and creative soul. He had the most beautiful smile and everyone who knew him loved him.
Bob is survived by his daughters Shelby Rigg, Cynthia Hart (John), step-children, Greg Tayor (Emiliana), Karen Turner-Bishop, Carla McElroy (Greg), numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Joseph ‘Joey’ Kaleikini Pia-Hoomanawanui Jr.
Joseph “Joey” Kaleikini Pia-Hoomanawanui Jr., 45, of Anahola, passed away on Sept. 11, 2023, in Anahola. He was born on Kaua‘i on Aug. 16, 1978, and he was a soljah known as Mr. Aloha embracing you with his local style warmth of hospitality.
Preceded in death by his parents Joseph Sr. and Sherry Pia, brother Christen “Chris” Angell, great-grandparents Wayne and Frances Sanden, Tutu man John “Kuku” Pia Sr. and Tutu lady Miriam “Aunty Girly” Pia.
Joseph is survived by his wife Kahala Pia-Hoomanawanui, son Makai, daughters Maya-Kai‘ulani (Terren), Manawale‘a, Maikela, Mehana-Lei, sisters Teresa Leina‘ala (Terence) Pia, Rayna Pia, Frances “Frankie” (Venancio) Hernandez-Martinez, grandson Keolamauloa, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, at Cummings farm in Anahola.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Dennis Mitsuaki Esaki
Dennis Mitsuaki Esaki, 71, of Wailua, passed away on July 25, 2023, at the Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu. He was born in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, on Nov. 20, 1951, and was the owner of Esaki Surveying and Mapping, Inc.
A private service was held. Garden Island Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements. Burial followed at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park.
A celebration of his life will be on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Grove Farm Park in Puhi.
Leah Kanoelani Pereira
Leah Kanoelani Pereira, of Kekaha, passed away on July 25, 2023, in Waimea at the age of 73. She was born on Sept. 18, 1949, in Waimea. She was a licensed practical nurse.
She was preceded in death by father Isaac K. L. Ho‘okano, mother Mitsuko Kimura and nephew Hoku Ho‘okano.
She is survived by husband Patrick Pereira, sons Patrick Liko Pereira of Waimea, Daniel Kila Pereira of Waimea, daughter Gina Marie (George) del Fierro of Makakilo, grandchildren Joshua Pereira, Tara del Fierro, Trey del Fierro, Kupono Pereira, great-grandchild Trekai del Fierro, brothers Aaron Ho‘okano of Honolulu, Isaac Liko Ho’okano of Kekaha, sister Prellna McGee of California, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Sept. 30, at the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands Kekaha Enterprise Center. Talk story/visitation is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. followed by a celebration of life.
The family suggests casual attire, welcomes flowers and requests that koden (monetary gifts) be omitted.
