LIHU‘E — The Lihu‘e United Church of Christ resumed its traditional Labor Day breakfast on Monday, when doors to the Parish Hall opened.
LIHU‘E — The Lihu‘e United Church of Christ resumed its traditional Labor Day breakfast on Monday, when doors to the Parish Hall opened.
“It’s been so long,” said Pastor Lani Namoa of the church’s Tongan congregation. “It’s really nice to have this breakfast, again.”
Donna Loo said it’s been about three years since the last breakfast after the traditional morning meal gathering was suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Monday, the Lihu‘e United Church and its Tongan congregation combined to serve about 400 meals to its appreciative audience that included longtime supporter Betty Bell, who has the distinction of being one of the eldest Zonta Club of Kaua‘i members.
Former Pastor Wesley Elmore was visiting from the Ridgecrest United Methodist Church in California, and still sporting his Kaua‘i Marathon wear after participating in the half marathon on Sunday.
Elmore, a former pastor with the Lihu‘e United Church of Christ, said it’s been about five years since he was here. He spent his time getting reacquainted with church members and familiar sites around town.
Proceeds from the 42nd Labor Day Breakfast will be donated to the Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity Homeless Shelter, and also used for the continued maintenance of the church’s historic Parish Hall and church grounds behind King Auto Center.
Entertainment was provided by Lihu‘e United Church of Christ members and the Tongan congregation, which unveiled a variety of Tongan and Pacific Island song and dance.
