Scott Smith-Cooke, from a “small town in California,” couldn’t believe his luck, running into and getting to hear Kaikona (they’re Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners from 2022) before the pair took a lunch break at the Wailua Bay Creators Fair at the Hilton Garden Inn Wailua Bay Kaua‘i, where Elvrine Chow got to share a tent to check out the action. Kudos to the organizers for getting everything set up around all those pipes on the ground at the hotel.

Chris Broussard of Clay in Mind said those sponge holders double as napkin holders, or even mail holders. I still have my Thomas Noyes mosquito punk holder, and it still works (if you can find some punk in the stores). Chris said he’ll be back at the Wailua Bay Creators Fair two more times, and close the year at the Grove Farm Market craft fair before the holidays.
Kudos to Chefs Judy Capertina and Maichole Perry (Chef Judy said she’s a real haole girl!) of Haole Girl Island Sweets on setting up at the Pau Hana Market at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e on Monday. Great place to get a snack (or dinner with those chicken pot pies) and listen to the music after shopping.
And, if the bon dance food craving is starting to set in, check out the Rev. Kohtoku Hirao and the Waimea Shingon Mission food fundraiser coming up on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 at the same place they had their bon dance. The fundraiser is to help their sister temple, the 122-year-old Lahaina Shingon Mission that was a casualty of the recent Maui wildfires. They’ll have flying saucers, sushi plates, roast pork plates, Indian curry and more.
