KILAUEA — An unidentified man has died following a traffic crash in Kilauea on Saturday evening.
The Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) said in a statement it will update the public once he is identified and the next of kin is notified.
Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday, KPD and Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel were dispatched to a report of a traffic crash involving a motor vehicle and motorcycle at the junction of Kuhio Highway and North Waiakalua Road.
According to a preliminary report, a male operating a Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling northbound on Kuhio Highway collided with a GMC truck attempting to turn left onto North Waiakalua Road. The truck was operated by a 33-year-old Kapa‘a man.
While the Kapa‘a man was uninjured, American Medical Response personnel pronounced the unidentified motorcyclist dead at the scene.
Kuhio Highway near North Waiakalua Road was closed in both directions for approximately 2.5 hours while the KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and toxicology reports are pending.
This is the second traffic-related fatality on Kaua‘i this year.
