A pedestrian walks past the hulk of a burnt vehicle and the adjoining fire damage on Monday afternoon, Aug. 7, 2023. The car was removed from the site by Tuesday morning, Aug. 8, 2023. According to the county, the Kaua‘i Fire Department received a report of a passenger vehicle on fire just before 9:15 a.m. on Aug. 5, 2023. Firefighters with the Lihu‘e fire station and Rescue 3 arrived by 9:20 a.m. to discover an unattended vehicle fully engulfed in flames. They had the fire under control by 9:40 a.m. With the help of the Kaua‘i Police Department, a safety perimeter was initiated. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tom Midstokke, of the Kaua‘i Senior Softball league, said he was on Maui last week for the state tournament. He added his contributions on Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, to the growing pile of donations at Rainbeau Jo’s on Rice Street.

There is only Saturday and Sunday remaining to Share the Aloha with Maui wildfire victims, as Rainbeau Jo’s (did you see how the outdoor cafe sitting area was overflowing with donations on Friday?) accepts donations (no cash, just merchandise like clothing, baby items and clothing, bedding, unused toiletries, towels, batteries, school supplied, flashlights, tents, coolers, basic underwear, socks and more) … Tom Midstokke said he was just on Maui last week for the Senior Softball State Tournament and had dinner in Lahaina … Aletha Thomas of Monkeypod Jam is doing her own relief fundraiser because the proceeds from her sold-out ‘Ulu cooking class is being forwarded to Maui wildfire victims.
