Cheryl Shintani, president of the Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i, said kudos are in order for Ruth Douthitt for winning the state Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee after the first runner-up in the Kaua‘i preliminaries correctly spelled “tamari (Justin George of the Alzheimer’s Association said it’s a sushi term)” in the 11th round. For her win, Douthitt wins a round trip for two to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies, and four nights at the California Hotel in Las Vegas.

Cheryl was helping with the Heiva I Kaua‘i paperwork (congratulations Jo and Tepairu Manea on hosting a great two-day Tahitian festival, er, competition!). So, where were they selling Heiva wear?
Edwin Vea missed all those crafters, but it doesn’t matter because a lot of them will be at The Beach House on Sunday, when Edwin coordinates the monthly craft fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the front lawn of The Beach House restaurant (it’s a good thing they don’t have a surf meet).
Kudos to Michelle Rego and the Office of Economic Development for making sure we have a Kaua‘i Made section, when the 29th Annual Made In Hawai‘i Festival opens on Aug. 18 to 20 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center in Honolulu. And kudos to Weslyn’s Creative Feathers, Salty Wahine, Kaua‘i Kookie, Mailelani’s, Tiki Pet Collars, Kilohana Clothing, ‘Aina Organic, Pele Jele, JJ ‘Ohana, Puahina and Kaua‘i Hemp for representing! Michelle said if you’re going, make sure you drop in on these vendors and say “Hi.”
