LIHU‘E — There will be a single playoff match for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys varsity volleyball crown on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the campus of Island School in Puhi, announced Island School Athletic Director Jerry Jona.
Waimea High School, sweeping its series against Kapa‘a on Friday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a, clinched the KIF second round by downing the Warriors in three sets, 28-26, 25-17 and 25-23. The Menehune finish the second round with one loss.
Earlier in the evening, the Menehune junior varsity squad was also winners, taking two of the three sets, 25-19, 25-21 and 12-15.
Over at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus in Puhi, the Voyagers, owners of the KIF first-round crown, celebrated its Senior Night with a 3-1 win — 25-19, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-22 — over Kaua‘i High School.
Lukas Myers who was moved to defensive specialist for the Voyagers, and JJ Louis, who earlier in the season received thunderous home applause when he joined the line as a server, were celebrated as Island School’s graduating seniors.
In an act of sportsmanship, the Voyagers also presented lei to the six Kaua‘i High School seniors — Hans Leo Carlos, Kyler Konishi, Joshua Erorita, Syrus Delos Reyes, Noah Louis and Cade Myers, who plays opposite his brother Lukas Myers, who hits for the Voyagers.
Cade Myers, who was limited atop crutches during the encounter against Waimea, shed his crutches for the Friday night contest, but his ankle was bound by heavy taping. He ended up not seeing any action for the night.
The Voyagers, following a highly competitive, four-set outing, retained its two-loss, second-round record to earn eligibility to the Tuesday night playoff match.
Earlier in the evening, the Kaua‘i JV swept its series over the Voyager JV, 27-25, 25-19 and 15-12.
The Tuesday night playoff at the Wilcox Gymnasium will determine the KIF champion, which will advance to the New City Nissan Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II Boys Volleyball Championships that will play from May 11 through 13 on O‘ahu.
