KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a pitcher Jaysie-Jean Riveira threw a two-hitter, and Lady Warrior bats erupted for 13 hits to lead Kapa‘a to a 16-6 win on Wednesday night at the wind-buffeted Kapa‘a High School softball field.
Kapa‘a took an early 2-0 lead when Lady Warrior Rhea Furtado drove in Sienna Yamashita with a two-bagger, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hailey Gibson.
The Red Raiders answered the hole with three runs in the third frame, when Jeyslen Orial singled, and coupled with a Warrior error, drove home Dallas Batoon and Jorey Ellamar for the short-lived 3-2 lead.
The Lady Warriors awoke in the home-half for eight runs on five whacks, and added another six runs in the fourth inning on six hits to lock up the contest, despite Kaua‘i coming up with three runs in the fifth frame.
In the win, Riveira gave up six runs on just two hits while striking out 12 and walking six Raider hitters.
Rhea Furtado and Charlize Kenney had the hot sticks for the Lady Warriors, Furtado nailing three hits, scoring three times, and driving in two Warrior runs. Kenney also nailed three hits, scored twice, and marked two runs batted in.
Kamryn Yates went four innings on the mound in her loss for the Red Raiders. During her tenure, she allowed 16 runs, 15 being earned runs, while giving up 13 hits, striking out three Warrior batters and walking nine.
Besides Orial, Cheyley Jacobs picked up Kaua‘i’s second hit, another two-bagger that drove in two RBIs.
The next Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation softball game takes place on Saturday when Kaua‘i welcomes Waimea High School to Isenberg Field, where the first pitch of a doubleheader goes off the mound at 10 a.m.
