HONOLULU — This Saturday, March 25, will be the third anniversary of the COVID-19 lockdown that fundamentally reshaped life on the island of Kaua‘i.
Three years later, the disease persists — but case counts remain relatively low.
The state Department of Health (DOH) reported last Wednesday a total of 31 new cases on Kaua‘i and 449 new cases statewide from March 7 to 13 — compared with 34 and 510 the week before.
The test positivity rate on Kaua‘i was 6.5 percent, compared with 4.2 percent statewide.
Eight COVID-19 deaths were reported statewide, none of which were located on Kaua‘i.
A March 14 DOH report estimated that a range of COVID-19 strains were prevalent on island, including Omnicron XBB.1.5, which is nicknamed the ‘Kraken’ subvarient for its rapid spread.
