The pickleball clinic on Sunday was sold out, and there was a lot of room for the Healthy Half Mile, said Bev Brody of Get Fit Kaua‘i.
These activities were just part of Fitness Week in Kalena Park that started on Saturday evening, when the monthly Bikes on Rice did a slow roll in the area surrounding Kalena Park, coinciding with the opening of the Downtown Lihu‘e Night Market that meets on the second Saturday of the month.
“A lot of the people in the clinic were part of the Healthy Half Mile,” Brody said. “This is a real easy paced event. You could probably do it in about 10 minutes. And, after we laid out the course so residents can just follow the arrows, the residents who live in the elderly housing can just come outside their door and they’re on the course.”
The Healthy Half Mile is only one of a series of activities geared to healthy and active lifestyles. The Healthy Half Mile will launch again on Wednesday at 5 p.m., Friday at 5 p.m., and again on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on the day Fitness Week ends.
“I’m waiting for Wednesday,” Brody said. “Not only is it the Healthy Half Mile, Po‘ipu Athletic Club is setting up the TRX at 5 p.m. I am curious as to how they’re going to do it. A lot of people participating in the pickleball clinic want to know more, like a couple of people in the clinic that said they wanted to see for themselves what all the hubbub was about.”
Other activities planned for the week are the Rise and Shine Circuit with the Kaua‘i Athletic Club starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, followed by yin yoga that starts at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday. These activities return Thursday, along with Mommy and Me Fitness at 10:30 a.m.
A lot of the participants in the Bikes on Rice, the Healthy Half Mile, and the pickleball clinic said they were impressed that similar programs weren’t offered at the places and sites they were familiar with. These included a family who moved here from Honolulu, a visitor from Hawai‘i Island, and a new county employee.
