WAIMEA — The Kaua‘i High tennis teams swept its series over Waimea, 5-0, 5-0, at the Menehune home court, and Island School split its series against Kapa‘a, the Voyager boys downing Kapa‘a 5-0, and the Kapa‘a girls 5-0 winners over the Voyagers at the Kapa‘a High tennis courts, on Saturday in Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis.
The Island School’s Fitzgerald boys, Michael and Mark, took the singles matches without giving up a point as Michael defeated Jayson Muramaru, 6-0, 6-0 in first singles, and Mark shut down Daniel Simpson, 6-0, 6-0 in boys second singles.
The Voyager boys took all three doubles matches, the first doubles match that was taken by Ryan So and Jacob Brosamer, 6-1, 6-1, and the tie-breaker 10-8, over Kapa‘a’s John Dumaoal and Ian Raquel.
Voyager Nachi Elzaurdia teamed with Bodhi Jones to take the boys second doubles, 6-2, 6-1 over the Kapa‘a duo of Keola Maroney and Ryan Murata.
Island School’s third doubles, Ryan Biederman and Jeremy Harris, were 6-2, 6-2 winners on Kapa‘a’s Rocky Gillis and Matt Asuncion.
Kapa‘a’s Toni Umalla got past Island School’s Katie Brown, 6-1, 6-3, in girls first singles, and Ocean Amador beat Voyager Brooklyn Mackey, 6-1, 6-3, in second singles.
In first doubles, Kapa‘a’s Chloe and Rain Hannsz got past Island School’s Lilah Hamid and Maya Ventura, 6-3, 6-1, and Lady Warriors Kailee Baltazar and Sage Keller were 6-4, 6-1 winners over Voyagers Luisa Junqueira and Nola Brown in second doubles.
Kapa‘a’s Beahilani Bacon and Chelcie Domingo teamed to beat Island School’s Thea Johnson and Ashley Chun, 6-4, 6-6 (7-5), in girls third doubles.
Early-morning sprinkles and the participation of Kaua‘i High School tennis players in the SAT testing delayed the start of the matches at the Waimea High courts.
“With delays due to the SAT testing of some of our juniors, the most exciting match was the No. 2 boys doubles match with Cody Torres and Nigel Agcaoili coming back from a first-set loss to beat Edward Pinkston and Keala Banasihan, 1-5, 6-3, 10-7,” said Kaua‘i High School coach Jennifer Hreljac.
“Nigel raced down with Dillon Fulks from taking the four-hour SATs and stepped right on the court,” she said. “I’m sure their heads were still spinning. We are so grateful to the Waimea teams with their willingness to work with us and wait for the test-takers to arrive.”
In boys first singles, Fulks was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Waimea’s Rhaziah Tacub-Taniguchi, and Waimea’s Mar Ruiz fell to Raider Rasil Manandhar, 6-0. 6-0.
Tanner Hubbard teamed with Isaac Mirey to give the Red Raiders a 6-1, 6-1 win over Waimea’s Edison Medina and Swede Sandblom in boys first doubles, and Red Raiders Robert Bishop and Brody Kapali were 6-2, 6-1 winners over Menehune Nicholas Bagaoisan and Anthony Udarbe in boys third doubles.
Parker Reed and Grace Aguilar were Kaua‘i High winners in girls singles, with Reed taking a 6-2, 6-1 win over Erich Borbos in first singles and Aguilar taking a 6-0, 6-0 win over Irish Oriente in girls second singles.
In girls first doubles, Red Raiders Savannah and Maddison Hubbard paired to take a 6-0, 6-0 win over Waimea’s Charmaine Acoba and Camryn Gonzales, and Kaua‘i High’s Taylee Yoshimoto and Kate Nakamura were 6-1, 6-0 winners over Waimea’s Tatiyanna Tagaus-Savage and Keala Banasihan in girls second doubles.
Kaua‘i High’s Sharba Holi and Samantha Tominaga took the girls third doubles by default.
There is no KIF tennis this weekend due to the spring break. The next KIF tennis matches take place Saturday, March 25, when Island School and Kaua‘i High meet at the Po‘ipu Kai courts starting at noon. Waimea will travel to the Kapa‘a High courts on March 27, with the first matches starting at 10 a.m.
