Masato Hori
On Jan. 14, 2023, Masato Hori passed away peacefully at home into God’s graces. He was 94 years old, born on Nov. 10, 1928 in Waimea. He was a retired construction supervisor and park ranger for the state of Hawai‘i, serving from Koke‘e to Hanalei (Kalalau).
He was preceded in death by wife Asako Hori, parents Kyusaku and Gin Hori, son Wayne and his wife Janice Hori, brother James Hori, sisters Janet Nii and Harriet Inouye, and son-in-law Kenneth Torigoe.
He is survived by daughters Cynthia (Ronald) Terry of Kalaheo and Karen Torigoe of Lihu‘e, son Clyde (Norma) Hori of Kalaheo, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A private celebration of life service will be held. Burial services will follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park. The family requests no koden (monetary donations).

Kay Kiyoko Kato
Kay Kiyoko Kato passed away on Jan. 27, 2023 in Hanapepe at the age of 90.
She was born on March 13, 1932 in Japan. She was a housewife.
She was preceded in death by husband Robert S. Kato and son Lance S. Kato.
She is survived by sons Blaine (Lorraine) Kato of O‘ahu and Glenn (Kehau) Kato of Kaua‘i, daughters June (Jeffrey) Ikeda of Hilo, Hawai‘i Island, and Laverne (Umesh) Gheewala of California, 16 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
A service is Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023 at the Garden Island Mortuary, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and services at 11 a.m.
The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.

Tammy Leilani Contrades
Tammy Leilani Contrades passed away on Jan. 6, 2023, at home in Princeville, at the age of 58. She was born on March 27, 1964, in Lihu‘e. She was a musician.
She was preceded in death by father David Kaheleiki Ka‘aumoana, mother Ardith Waialoha La‘amea-Ka‘aumoana, sisters Linda Puanani Ka‘aumoana-Texeira, Merla-Ann Nalani “Snowball” Ka‘aumoana and Cindy Keala Ka‘aumoana-Pa, and son Jonah Ka‘aumoana.
She is survived by husband Ronald Contrades Sr. of Princeville, sons James Lima Ka‘aumoana of O‘ahu, Steven Ikaika Ka‘aumoana of Kaua‘i and Makai‘o Kealaka‘i (Tiffany Suliven) Ka‘aumoana of O‘ahu, daughters Schelcie Kamaile (Cyrus Higa) Ka‘aumoana of Kaua‘i and Ho‘okela Minoaka Contrades of Kaua‘i, eight grandchildren, sister Doreen Haunani “Bula” Soares of Kaua‘i, and numerous uncles, aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Harry Masami Muranaka passed away on Jan. 30, 2023 in Waimea at the age of 87. He was born on March 11, 1935, in Waimea. He was a chemist.
He was preceded in death by parents Takejro and Kaya Muranaka, brothers Teruto, Kaoru and Satoru Muranaka, and sisters Jeannie Okuhara and Fusaye Muranaka.
He is survived by daughters Naomi (Royce) Lipp-Kryster of Kapa‘a and Jayne Muranaka of Kekaha, grandson Kupono Pereira, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Leimamo ‘Mamo’ Shimatsu
Deborah-Lee Leimamo “Mamo” Shimatsu passed away on Jan. 24, 2023 in Kekaha, at the age of 65. She was born on Oct. 14, 1957, in Hana, Maui. She was a U.S. Army veteran and an electronics technician.
She was preceded in death by husband Ainsworth Tsugio Shimatsu, parents Caroline Kaiminaauao Kahula, Alberto Acadamia Ho‘opi‘i and Walter Halenani Dela Cruz, and sister Rowena Alohalani Stone.
She is survived by son Alton (Michelle) Shimatsu of Kekaha, daughters Kayla Shimatsu of Kekaha and Kaesha Shimatsu of Kekaha, six grandchildren, brothers Fabian “Duke” (Renee) Ho‘opi‘i of Maui, Alberto “Junior” Ho‘opi‘i Jr. of Kalaheo, Walter “Hale Boy” (Rose) Dela Cruz of Maui, Robert (Lynn) Dela Cruz of Maui and Glen (Sharon) Dela Cruz of Las Vegas, sisters Norma-Jean (Dean) Manuel of Waimea and Camille (David) Hesapene of Hanapepe, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Thelma Samiano Ortal
Thelma Samiano Ortal passed away on Dec. 21, 2022 at Laoag City, Philippines, at the age 62. She was born on March 28, 1960, in Camandingan, Batac City, Philippines. She was a pastor’s wife in the Philippines and a U.S. Army veteran.
She was preceded in death by parents Paulino and Angeles Samiano, parents Ignacio and Eugenia Nanca, sister Fidela N. Samiano and brother Domingo C. Nanca.
She is survived by husband Charlie Ortal, daughters Kristine (Ben) Elizabeth Ortal Donios, Shekaina Joy Ortal and Naomi Keala Samiano Ortal, brothers Orlando (Elizabeth) Nanca and Bonifacio (Laring) Nanca, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at Aloha Church Kaua‘i, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. and services at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Marjory Lou Naone
Marjory Lou Naone, 82, of Kihei, Maui, died on Dec. 25, 2022. She was born on Oct. 31, 1940, in Lihu‘e, to John C. Reis and Mabel Borges Reis of Kealia. She graduated from St. Catherine School in Kapa‘a and Kapa‘a High School in 1958.
She was preceded in death by parents, brothers Douglas, Jerry and Donald Reis, and son Vincent Lopez Jr.
She is survived by sons Lyons “Kapio” Naone IV and Lee ”Kaleo” Naone, both of Kihei, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one on the way.
