WAILUA — Waimea High School paddling teams in the Junior Varsity Girls, Varsity Girls, and Varsity Mixed set the stage by winning three of the six events on Saturday, Jan. 14, during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation sprints paddling regatta at Wailua River.
Kapa‘a High School teams took the Varsity Boys class to round out the day’s winners in the varsity division races.
On the points spread, Waimea finished with 19 points on the day’s outing, challenged by Kapa‘a High School teams that collected 14 points.
Kaua‘i High School teams finished the day at Wailua River by taking the JV Boys and and the JV Mixed classes for a total of 18 points after the Red Raiders’ Varsity Boys finished in second place.
Island School, whose Varsity Girls are chasing the top spot at the sprints following three first finishes in the earlier distance races, finished the day with 10 points.
On cumulative points, the Varsity Voyagers girls are in the lead with 18/21 points, challenged by the Menehune wahine holding 11/16 points. Kapa‘a Varsity girls are in third place with 8/10 points, with Kaua‘i girls rounding out the leaderboard with 7/8 points.
The Kapa‘a Varsity Boys, following their victory on Saturday, currently lead the division with 16/21 points, challenged by Island School boys who had no points recorded, Saturday, holding 11 points. Waimea holds the third spot with 9/12 cumulative points, followed by the Red Raider men at 6/8 points.
Waimea Varsity Mixed, following its Saturday win in the class, holds the lead in the Mixed division with 18/23 points, closely challenged by Island School at 14/17. Kapa‘a High School is in third place with 8/10. Kaua‘i rounds out the leaderboard at 4/5.
Junior Varsity standings have Island School leading the JV Girls with 20/22 points over the Menehune, who posts an 11/16 points. Kapa‘a JV girls are 7/8, followed by Kaua‘i at 6/9.
For the JV Boys, the race is between Kaua‘i, who has a 20/25 reading and Kapa‘a, who is at 12/15.
In the JV Mixed races, Kapa‘a holds the cumulative points lead with 18/21, followed by the Red Raiders at 13/18. Island School follows at 9/11, with Waimea rounding out the standings at 4/5.
With the KIF championship regatta looming on Saturday, Jan. 21, the championship regatta will yield double points. First blades hit the water at a scheduled 9 a.m. at Wailua River.
