Elaine is a single mom to a toddler and cannot afford child care, and because of this is unable to work. Elaine tries what she can to bring in extra income, but finds it difficult for it to be consistent.
Due to limited funds, Christmas will be hard for her this year. Elaine would appreciate toys, and gift cards for her this year. Any assistance would be dearly appreciated.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily, front-page stories about families and individuals (we don’t use their real names) facing challenges and who would appreciate a little help.
The Christmas Fund is an avenue for everyone to provide that assistance. Donations are used by Zonta Club members to purchase gift certificates that are in turn distributed to families and individuals through social-service agencies.
Each donation is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrative costs involved, and money goes directly to provide for those in need of Christmas presents and groceries.
If you hold a fundraiser for the Christmas Fund, let us know and we’ll spread the word. Anyone making a donation of $150 or more can have their picture published in TGI.
Donations may be made by way of the website, Zonta-Kaua‘i.org, or checks can be made payable to The Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation, P.O. Box 3032, Lihu‘e, HI 96766.
• Frank and Francine are a young couple, who recently experienced being homeless, and were fortunate to obtain housing. They both work, but find it difficult to afford anything, even though they both work full-time jobs.
This year they would appreciate gift cards for groceries, as this would help them to save a little bit of money to go toward future housing. They are grateful for anything they receive.
• Abby and Alan were previously homeless before moving into supportive housing. Earlier this year they had a beautiful baby girl. This will be their first Christmas indoors with their new born, and are grateful they were able to move into housing.
When Alana was born she had experienced complications and needed to be sent to see a specialist. While she is at home now, they still need to travel for appointments.
With a three-person household, finances are tight. This year, they would appreciate gift cards for food and baby formula, as well as some toys for their daughter.
