Koke‘e fire extinguished
KOKE‘E — Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters responded to a brush fire at 7:30 p.m. Friday that broke out in Koke‘e.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters from the Waimea and Hanapepe fire stations were dispatched to the fire reported near mile marker 4 along Waimea Canyon Drive. Once on scene, personnel found an area, approximately 50 feet by 50 feet, of brush and trees on fire, spreading slowly.
Access to the fire was difficult, as it surrounded a small reservoir. After finding an area to cross an irrigation ditch, Waimea firefighters attacked the north side of the blaze and were able to quickly contain the fire spread.
Other Waimea firefighters worked the south end of the fire and extinguished brush and trees that were burning. Hanapepe personnel and a battalion chief assisted in efforts.
Crews cleared the scene around 11 p.m. Personnel from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife were called to monitor the area for hot spots through the night.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
