LIHU‘E — U.S. Army recruiter Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Fussell said Kapa‘a High student Ella Anderson is still the best Kaua‘i sharpshooter following the 2022 Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Sporter Air Rifle State Championship meet held Monday at the Neal Blaisdell Center on O‘ahu.
LIHU‘E — U.S. Army recruiter Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Fussell said Kapa‘a High student Ella Anderson is still the best Kaua‘i sharpshooter following the 2022 Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Sporter Air Rifle State Championship meet held Monday at the Neal Blaisdell Center on O‘ahu.
Anderson, the battalion commander of the Kapa‘a High JROTC, finished the state meet in 18th place with a total score of 518 points that included 189 points for the prone position shooting, 154 points for the standing position, and 175 points for the kneeling position.
Fussell, commander for the U.S. Army Recruiting Station, said he accompanied the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation sharpshooters through the courtesy of Kapa‘a High School Principal Tommy John Cox.
He said the Waimea High girls as a team finished in eighth place at the state meet after one of its sharpshooters could not finish the match because of medical reasons. Overall, the Menehune team finished with 1,677 points at the competition won by the girls of Pearl City High School that amassed 2,106 points.
The Kaua‘i High boys finished fifth out of eight teams with 1,973 points at the competition that was won by the Kaiser High School boys, who totalled 2,081 points, 18 points better than the Hanalani boys, who finished the competition with 2,063 points.
Jacob Andres, finishing 23rd overall, led the Kaua‘i High contingent with an overall total of 510 points.
Fussell said the Kapa‘a JROTC will be washing cars Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e to help with some of the air rifle expenses. The Kapa‘a unit, led by Anderson, also wants to start a Raider team and compete in the Maui Madness Challenge.
