WAIMEA — The county Department of Public Works and contractor Prometheus Construction announced that a portion of Menehune Road and the Waimea swinging bridge are closed now through Friday, Aug. 26, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.
Local traffic may pass through the area from noon to 12:30 p.m. Work will not occur during the Statehood Day weekend, from Aug. 19 to Aug. 21.
The closure is necessary to allow Prometheus Construction to install rockfall-impact barriers above Menehune Road.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ alternate emergency access route from Waimea Canyon Drive will only be open to residents and first responders with four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Koloa
• There is no left turn allowed off of Maluhia Road onto westbound Kaumuali‘i Highway now through Sept. 15, to allow for intersection improvements. See https://tgilinks.com/3SJW2LH for details;
• A single-lane closure is possible in either direction on Kaumuali‘i Highway between mile markers 6.3 and 6.9, vicinity of Maluhia Road, on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for tree trimming;
Lawa‘i to ‘Ele‘ele
• A roving, single-lane closure is possible in either direction on Kaumuali‘i Highway between Upa Road and the vicinity of Waialo Road from Monday through Friday, Aug. 15 to 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., for guardrail repair.
Kapa‘a
• Portions of Mailihuna, Hau‘a‘ala and Kawaihau roads will be closed Monday through Thursday, Aug. 15 to 18, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., for clearing and grubbing work, roadway excavation and sidewalk construction. The intersection of the three roads will experience temporary traffic shifts and temporary traffic-control plans will be in place. Wailua
• A right-shoulder closure and narrowed lanes of Kuhio Highway in the southbound direction between mile markers 5.7 and 6.7, in the vicinity of Leho Drive and the Kapa‘a bypass road, continue, for the Kuhio Highway Short-Term Improvements;
• A two-lane closure of Kuhio Highway in either direction between mile markers 5.6 and 6.6, in the vicinity of Leho Drive and the Kapa‘a bypass road, takes place nightly from 8 p.m. from today through 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, for paving for the Kuhio Highway Short-Term Improvements. The night closure beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, will run to 6 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 19;
• A single alternating lane closure on Kuamo‘o Road possible in either direction in the vicinity of Aina Pono Street, Monday through Thursday, Aug. 15 to 18, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., for tree and grass cutting.
Hanalei
• A right-lane closure on Kuhio Highway is possible in either direction between Waipa Stream and Lumahai Beach, Monday through Friday, Aug. 15 to 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., for installation of rumble strips and pavement striping.
Kilauea
• A right-lane closure on Kuhio Highway is possible in either direction between Wailapa Road and Kahiliholo Road Monday through Thursday, Aug. 15, to 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., for tree and grass cutting.
Lane-closure schedules may change at any time without further notice, and all projects are weather-permitting.
