NAWILIWILI — Kelvin Moniz, the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank executive director, was more than appreciative of the visit by the team from Mokihana Insurance Agency Wednesday afternoon at the KIFB facility in Nawiliwili.
NAWILIWILI — Kelvin Moniz, the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank executive director, was more than appreciative of the visit by the team from Mokihana Insurance Agency Wednesday afternoon at the KIFB facility in Nawiliwili.
“Not only is this food needed,” Moniz said. “These people have been doing it for a long time, now.”
The Mokihana Insurancer Agency team spearheaded by Kellie Okayama, Gavin Toyofuku, Shawn Paglinawan, and Ariella Borre, collected food at the agency for the month of July, starting on the first and wrapping up on the 29th.
The delivery to KIFB amounted to more than 700 pounds of food collected, and an additional more than $750 in cash.
“This is food that is needed by the people,” Moniz said. “We had an unusually large number of people, Wednesday during the KIFB twice-monthly emergency food distribution. Because of the construction taking place at the entrance, we had to move everyone to the grassy area across the parking lot.”
Moniz said KIFB will be participating in a tabletop, next week on O‘ahu, where everyone who deals with emergency food relief will be meeting to discuss what is going to happen and in which direction food insecurity is going to take.
“This was just a service project,” said Gavin, who is aspiring to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy. “Service projects always look good on college applications.”
The Toyofuku family have been hosting annual monthly food drives from when the children were in elementary school as a service project meant to give back to the community.
