Darnell Sugioka and Allen Huber of the Project Vision Hawai‘i Hi‘ehi‘e mobile-hot-shower unit have come a long way from when the project started with the shelter-in-place COVID-19 encampments (and, The Salvation Army is asking for contributions of school supplies to their Lihu‘e and Hanapepe Corps — school starts Aug. 1).

And another round of kudos to all the organizers of the Back to School Bash!
Welcome back to Kaua‘i, John Feagans, who arrived on island in time to see all the sand being moved around at the Salt Pond Beach Park by the historic south swell that crashed the south- and west-facing shores over the weekend. And kudos to the Kaua‘i Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau lifeguards who took to the water on their personal watercraft to patrol the South Shore coastlines and keep everyone safe!
Hopefully, the excitement has calmed down enough to hold the final week of the county’s Junior Lifeguard program at Kalapaki Beach. Monday classes were called off due to that gnarly waves breaking over the Nawiliwili breakwater (is it more than 100 years old?).
OK, this weekend Koloa Plantation Days start with the Paniolo Heritage Rodeo Friday afternoon. The rodeo runs through Sunday at CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu, and Koloa Plantation Days events continue through July 31. Check koloaplantationdays.com for all the happenings, and the special section on the South Shore celebrations in our Friday paper.
Tickets for the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre’s AM Rising Stars are also on sale for their summer showcase production that starts with the Thursday production at 5:30 p.m. at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e (no more tent productions!). Visit hawaiichildrenstheatre.org for tickets and more information.
