LIHU‘E — The National Weather Service has issued a high-surf warning for all south-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, effective now through 6 a.m. Monday.
The NWS said a historic south swell is producing dangerous waves along south-facing shores through today. Surf was forecast to build to 14 to 18 feet Saturday, then rise to 18 to 24 feet through Sunday night.
Kaua‘i Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau officials are advising no swimming and snorkeling on south- and west-facing shores due to dangerous ocean conditions. Beach-goers are warned that large, breaking surf, significant shore break and dangerous currents make entering the water hazardous. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.
Entering the water in these areas during the warning is very hazardous and could cause serious injury or death. Spectators are also advised to use extreme caution, as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline.
Ahead of reports of a “historic” South Pacific swell bringing high surf and rough ocean conditions over the weekend, several state beach parks along south-facing shores will be closed.
This large south swell is expected to be the largest seen in Hawai‘i over the last decade. Waves were
forecast to peak in the 15-to-20-foot range on the south shores of each island, building all day Saturday to high-surf-warning levels Saturday night through Sunday night. Large wave run up and coastal impacts are expected, especially during the late afternoon high tides.
In light of the anticipated swells, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of State Parks closed several beach parks on other islands Saturday and possibly today.
The warning may be extended or modified as conditions develop. For updated information on ocean and weather alerts, visit the NWS website, weather.gov/hfo.
