Q: The coronavirus pandemic decimated the tourism industry Kaua‘i – and the state – is so reliant upon. Should Kaua‘i County make economic diversity a priority, and if so, how?
Our county did a tremendous job in addressing the economic shock that the coronavirus pandemic brought to our island. Our County administration made the tough decisions that resulted in the lowest daily new cases of COVID-19 throughout the state during the beginning of this pandemic which resulted in positive outcomes for our people. To assure economic diversity, six industry clusters were identified as promising areas of growth and they are: Food and Agriculture; Sustainable Technologies & Practices; Science and Technology; Health and Wellness; Sports and Recreation and Arts and Culture. I look forward in continuing to work together to assure that these areas provide positive results for our community.
Q: Kaua‘i continues to look for a new landfill site, years after its search began. The clock is ticking: The Kekaha landfill is currently projected to reach capacity in January 2027. What is your preferred solution?
First order of business is to site a new landfill location soon. We have gone through numerous discussions on the siting of a new landfill namely the Ma‘alo site in Hanama‘ulu. This site was listed as a viable site through a comprehensive study that was done on potential landfill locations on our island. However, due to close proximity to the airport and birds that could pose a hazard to the airport area, this location is no longer acceptable. I continue to support reduce, reuse, and recycling programs and the need for a Resource Recovery Park where we can create a solid recycling program for our island.
Q: The median price of a single-family home on Kaua‘i is over $1 million, and the County’s 2018 General Plan reported 44% of all households are cost-burdened. How will you address the affordable housing crisis in Kaua‘i County?
I would continue to support the completion of existing affordable housing projects such as Lima Ola where the land is available but the need for additional financial support is limited. We need to assure that support funding is available, so we are able secure additional funding to complete these housing projects and look forward to more affordable housing opportunities in the future.
Q: The County Council sets real property tax rates as part of the County budget process. What changes, if any, would you make to the way that property is taxed on-island?
I have no major changes at the moment. We continue to look closely at the various tax classes and tax rates to ensure that homeowners are benefiting from our various programs that include exemptions from assessments.
Q: What is driving you to seek election and why should voters give you their vote?
As the former Mayor and current council member, I would like to continue to work with my fellow council members and together in seeking solutions for our island home. With my leadership experience, I would like to continue my service to our people as a council member who is open and able to bridge and connect resources.
It looks like you’ve sketched some broad questions. I’d like to see the fine prints. Specific incidents of property taxes wasn’t working. Please do.
I just can’t figure it out. 19060s or 1970s, was this guy playing for the baseball little league team in Kapa’a. How many homeruns did he hit over the fence? A lot. Now he wants in on the nerds like Nancy Pelosi, of California,
Is this possible? Jocks to nerds. All because he had a 18% share of Kaua’i’s votes. As County Councilman, It doesn’t make sense to me. I watched a few cable tv meeting of them. It didn’t look qualified. I mean no paychecks handed out. I think it was channel 53, Very sloppy work to be on the nice side. Really not voting for Kai as governor because Kai talks like you guys. Super junk.
These are the candidates we are choosing from:
Billy Decosta, former pop warner and high school football star 1984.
This guy. UH football 1979, Hula bowl
Kai Kahele, Military, UH Hilo baseball, Lt. Governor
Ross Kagawa, term limit up per Gary Hooser article
All stupid candidates.
Check this out. I paid $455.49 dollars for my new iPhone somewhat. 2020 SE. What the hell is this? I meant you guys. All you junk candidates. Do you see it?
I know Kaua’i only represents 4.96% of Hawai’i’s population. So UH football is only good for chit chat. But since you have a County Councilmember who played college football in the 1970s, I thought it best to add that information here. NASED, new Aloha stadium has now moved up to 2026. Financially, nobody cares about football in Hawai’i. Honolulu SA. Football goers….
I was curious also about this man. Does he have a all capital letter handwriting or does he scribble it like a physician does? There is an intellect approach here. If he’s receiving any income.
August 13 is the last day for primary election drop off. I kind of have made up my mind. National news, U.S. Congress House of Representatives, got to give it to Jill Tokuda. Governor, Josh Green. Lt. Governor, I’m at awe. Duke Aiona.
And the others, you decide on your own. Some column writer was commenting on if they wanted to make Kaua’i world class with more tourist coming here. I think it is 50-50 on the tourism part. The deciding factor is locals here. Let’s put a night club in Kapa’a side. This was in 1991. I didn’t think so. Too damn steep for a club like that and one that has gold poles for the girls. That’s what Tampa Bay, Florida has. Why not Kaua’i? Let the people decide.
For now, restaurants only. No constructions like that. The drawback, is no revenue also into Kaua’i. There’s no other way to do this. Tourism? You must supply the wants and needs to have a market of goods and services to work with. Hopefully people will read all my comments.
I took a peek at the primary election. 38.5% turnout voters. Only sports people voted for this guy. Still not a qualified candidate to act on behalf of Kaua’i. Too poor and stupid. statistics is everything. TAT for example. No collections done is what i see. The rich people aren’t stupid.
