PUHI — The Safeway-brand, 20-pound bag of white rice already had its special sale pricing attached Monday morning when the Safeway stores, both the Waipouli Kaua‘i Village and the Puhi Hokulei Village Shopping Center locations, announced a rice drive benefiting the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i.
The drive continues through Monday, June 20.
Rice is one of the sought-after commodities at the food bank, and the post-COVID-19 inflation has seen the price of rice, among other things, skyrocket.
It is also part of food distributions being done by the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i and affiliated partner food pantry programs.
Michelle Panoke of the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i said there are a few spots remaining for the drive-thru food distribution it is hosting Saturday at the Kaua‘i Philippine Cultural Center in Puhi from 9 to 10 a.m.
Advance reservations are required. The Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i is planning to distribute enough food for 300 families. Register at igfn.us/f/3t2b/n.
