NAWILIWILI — Three fishermen were rescued Sunday morning after their boat sank in waters off Nawiliwili.
Shortly before 9:30 a.m., Lihu‘e firefighters were called to assist the U.S. Coast Guard at Nawiliwili Harbor after receiving a report of three fisherman who were near Kawai Point when they ran into problems with their boat, a rigid-hull inflatable, a county press release said. According to a preliminary report, the boat the men were aboard sank and they swam to a nearby shoreline. Two of the fishermen were able to walk along the shoreline to the Nawiliwili break wall, where personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard brought them back to the harbor. The remaining fisherman was located on the northern coastline of Kawai Point and needed further assistance. Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 short-hauled the man to a landing zone at Nawiliwili boat ramp. The three fishermen were uninjured and were released at the scene. The distressed vessel was towed back to the Nawiliwili boat ramp by the U.S. Coast Guard.
