WAILUA — Island School added to its trophy case after its boys golf team and the two Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf individualists — Spencer Summerhayes and Ema-Lani Ebesu — were crowned following two days of golf at the KIF golf championship and state qualifier at Wailua Golf Course, where the last ball of the 36-hole tournament dropped Saturday.
Henry Anderson of Kaua‘i High fired a two-day 172 to earn one of the state qualifier spots, and Ty Tsukayama of Waimea High finished two strokes back at 174 to earn the second state qualifier berth.
The battle for the boys KIF individualist was even tighter as Island School’s Lucas Summerhays finished the opening round with the best boys score of the day at 82 at the windy course.
His brother Spencer followed two strokes back at 84.
On the second day of play, Lucas set the pace, crossing with a three-over 39 while brother Spencer crossed into the Wailua back nine with a 43.
Spencer tamed the back nine to finish with a two-over 38, while Lucas struggled at 45 to finish the overall play at 166, just a stroke back of Spencer’s 165 that earned him the KIF title.
Ebesu was conservative and finished with a two-day 193 to wear the KIF girls crown.
With the wins, Ebesu and the KIF girls team, Kaua‘i High School, travel to the 2022 David S. Ishii Foundation Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association girls golf championships at the Ka‘anapali Kai course on Maui from May 6 and 7.
The boys travel to the Ka‘anapali Royal course on May 9 and 10.
