HONOLULU — Candidate filings for the 2022 election cycle open up on Tuesday, but not all candidate filings are open.
According to the state’s Office of Elections, the State of Hawai‘i Supreme Court issued a court order temporarily suspending candidate filing for the offices of U.S. Representative, state Senate, and state Representative contests until further notice from the court.
The order arises from a challenge of the 2021 State Reapportionment Plan.
Candidate filing will open as scheduled for County of Kaua‘i Mayor and County Council positions, as well as U.S. Senate, governor, lieutenant governor, Office of Hawaiian Affairs positions, and others.
The filing season is open through June 7.
Individuals interested in becoming a candidate for elective office must complete and file a nomination paper to appear on the ballot. One of the requirements to file for office is the individual must obtain signatures from a minimum number of voters in the district in which they are seeking office.

The 2022 primary election is Aug. 13, and the general election is Nov. 8. Hawai‘i votes by mail, so voters should expect to receive their ballots 18 days before each election.
