Kapa‘a High boys varsity basketball coach Kamahalo Kauhane watches in the fourth quarter as Kaua‘i High’s Kelson Rapozo (is he one of the boys coach Kaleo Carvalho of the Mayor’s Office comes to cheer?) comes off the bench to post against the drive of Kapa‘a’s Epoki Tafea, one of four seniors celebrated on Senior Night during a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation game at Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.

Basilio “Coach Bunga” Fuertes cut the seedlings distribution short because Carmila Udarbe (she was imagining seeing her brother playing basketball) had a basketball game (that was how she started her seedling distributions with Coach Bunga!) with the Eastside Basketball League Saturday afternoon.

Kudos, Bronson Carvalho and the county Department of Parks &Recreation, on getting the Mini and Jr. Hoopsters up and going for more than 170 young basketball players and their fans. It’s nice to see Kalaheo Neighborhood Center come alive with events beyond COVID-19 testing and vaccines.
Kudos to the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation and the high-school basketball coaches and staffs for completing a COVID-19-shortened boys basketball season (Coach Bunga was planning on taking in the Waimea Senior Night game), where coach Brandon Moises and the Menehune bucketed a season-high 78 points against Island School!
Coach Bunga has been selected the Waimea Town Celebration Ambassador of Aloha (more basketball during the 3-on-3 hoops tournament Friday and Saturday!), and will receive his Malama Award during the Ambassador of Aloha &Music Concert Wednesday (tickets available online at waimeatowncelebration.com) at the Historic Waimea Theater.
OK, gotta go look for some Girl Scout cookies. It’s a long weekend, so stay safe.
