LIHU‘E — A pair of long-distance goals from Kaua‘i High School team captain Adrianna Hernandez set the pace for the Kaua‘i High School girls’ 5-1 win over the Island School girls, Wednesday afternoon during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation soccer match at the Island School field.
Over at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park, the hosting Kapa‘a Warriors took both ends of their matches against Waimea, the Lady Warriors being 2-0 better than the Menehune girls, and the Warrior men soaring past Waimea, 5-1.
Kapa‘a’s girls broke a 0-0 stalemate in the final five minutes of the opening half when Trachelle Iwamoto found the net in the 37th minute. Jessica Drent found her goal two minutes later for the 2-0 bulge in the final minute before the break. The score stood for the remaining 40 minutes of play.
Facing a 0-4 deficit in the first half, Waimea’s Jaden Sams found the net in the 27th minute to prevent a shutout at the break.
However, the effort came up short as the Menehune could not overcome the Warriors’ scoring that started in the first nine minutes of play when Kaula Shiroma found the net for the first time. Shiroma scored twice in the contest, his second goal coming in the 22nd minute of the first half.
Kapa‘a got scores from Anthony Durocher in the 12th minute, and Jayden Yamashita in the 32nd minute for the 4-1 bulge at the half. Patrick Urbina completed the Kapa‘a scoring with a goal in the 48th minute.
Over at the Island School field, Kaua‘i got on the boards first when Brianna Ehia found the net in the first 10 minutes of play followed by Team Captain Hernandez blasting a shot from more than 30 yards out past the Island School goalkeeper Mary Magoun at the 35th minute.
With about a minute remaining in the first half, Kaleonahe “Nahe” Bukoski’s shot gave the Red Raiders a 3-0 bulge at the break.
Hernandez opened the second half on another long ball from about 30 yards out that got past the defending traffic and the Voyager keeper for the 4-0 lead in the 45th.
Voyager Brooklyn Mackey had luck on her side when the Kaua‘i goalkeeper slipped in the box with that hiccup giving Mackey the window to score on the heels of Hernandez’s goal. Mackey’s score rolled in at the 46th minute.
Kaua‘i’s Shania Kelly put the game away in the 68th minute following several attempts at venturing into scoring territory but coming up empty, the victim of Cass Hubbard’s booming leg.
Thursday night, Kapa‘a Junior Varsity girls’ Shyloh McCann peeled off a double hat trick during the JV Lady Warriors’ 11-0 win over the Kaua‘i girls JV team that fielded 10 players for the night.
With Kapa‘a matching play, the JV Lady Warriors got two goals from Olivia Jenkins, and a goal each from Kailee-Ann Baltazar, Kanoe Haneberg, and Kaliyah Cummings in the shutout.
On the boys’ field, the JV Warriors fretted about having just 10 players, but that was unfounded as the Waimea JV boys fielded 10 players to match up against the JV Kapa‘a squad.
Both squads battled to a 1-1 stalemate with Waimea getting its goal from Jaelon Hines and Kapa‘a’s net coming off the foot of Makaio Hickson in a game that was contested with just a center official covering both contests.
