WAIMEA — The Kaua‘i High boys basketball program took both ends of its series on Tuesday night during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation games against Waimea High School at Clem Gomes Gym.
The junior-varsity Red Raiders, fueled by 11 points from Kala‘i Esteban, roared from a 21-3 first quarter lead to a 56-32 win over the Waimea JV, which got 10 points from Jeydon Moises, including a first-quarter three-ball.
Eli Ewig poured in nine points, including a fourth-quarter trey, for Waimea.
Issac Mirey followed Esteban in scoring with 10 points, and Josh Rego helped the JV Red Raiders with nine points that included seven points dropping in the third frame.
The varsity Red Raider boys surged with a scoring flurry in the waning minutes of their contest to pull ahead of a tight game and lock up a 49-40 win over the Menehune in the nightcap before a good-sized audience.
Cade Myers topped the Red Raider scoring with 12 points. Mareyon Cromartie added nine marks, and Noah Luis finished with seven points.
Tresten Shigematsu scored 11 points for the Menehune, including a three-ball in the second quarter. Kainoa Moody dropped in eight points. Keiani Lewis netted his five points in the third quarter, including the second of only two treys in the contest.
Results and information from the Kapa‘a-Island School contests were not available at press time.
With the win, Kaua‘i High, now 2-0 in the season that resumed following the COVID-19 pause, hosts Kapa‘a High, an earlier winner over Waimea, Saturday at the Kaua‘i High gym. The JV contest starts at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity match tipping off 20 minutes following the completion of the JV contest.
Waimea will make the trip to the Wilcox Gymnasium to battle Island School Saturday, with the first contest tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
