‘ELE‘ELE — ‘Ele‘ele School student Carmila Udarbe will be joined by Roy Miyashiro and her mentor coach Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes in distributing seedlings Saturday from noon at the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center.
“We were supposed to distribute the seedlings next week,” said Fuertes. “But they’re growing too fast, and if we wait they’ll be too big. We need to get them out quickly.”
The seedlings available include green eggplant, the Nitta variety eggplant, cherry tomatoes, Hawaiian chili peppers, Japanese cucumbers, zucchini, spiny okra, large okra, kabucha pumpkin, long beans, lima beans, round squash, ridge squash, also known as Kabatiti squash, and Okinawa bittermelon.
“Normally we start the distribution from 8 a.m.,” said Fuertes, a former coach at Waimea High School. “But the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross country meet is at Waimea High School this week. I wanted to go watch the runners before getting the seedlings out.”
Proceeds from the seedling distribution go toward replenishing supplies for Udarbe’s gardens for future distributions, with any surplus going toward the student’s college fund.
