Tina Lafaele, Nomee Leoni, Leka Lafaele and Tee Namoa had the right idea — celebrate Labor Day (how many of us had to work on Labor Day?) after work in the shaded outdoor seating area at Kalapaki Joe’s at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e, where they could check out the traffic to and from the Pau Hana Market (they were working, too).

Congratulations to Sonya Emura of Kaua‘i Churros for making her debut at the Pau Hana Market (Finnegan would’ve loved ‘em, Melissa McFerrin-Warrack!). Terry Phillips was trying to figure out how to sneak bites from the brown paper bag, and Brent Mizutani loved that Makoa and Makana were helping mom. If you missed them (they’re really good in original, sprinkles and coconut flavors), Sonya should be back on Saturday at the Grove Farm Market in Puhi.
Amy Chun said the paperwork is in, and barring any kind of last-minute hang-ups, we should be looking at Indian food next Monday at the KGC market.
Risa Clemmons of Pong Farm had a branch of egg fruit hanging so shoppers could see how the fruit is in the orchards, and Mayette Loseto (nope, no Javalana organic corn Monday) had Okinawa sweet potatoes (anyone see that virtual Okinawa Festival?). Yes, they’re purple like ube, but they’re not the same. Mayette said we gotta wait a couple more months before the ube is ready, and then we’ll have a discussion on the differences — purple versus purple. Too bad Kaua‘i Bakery closes at 2 p.m., no can have those ube malasadas.
