WAIMEA — A final community meeting for the Waimea 400 conceptual community master plan will be held virtually online on Thursday, Sept. 9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The purpose of this meeting is to review the final conceptual plan for the Waimea 400 site based on feedback from community members and agency and resource partners, as well as to discuss the next steps for implementation.
Waimea 400 is the name of a 400-acre site the county owns and plans to develop mauka of Kaumuali‘i Highway between Waimea and Kekaha. Continuous public input has been sought and numerous public meetings have been held.
During the meeting, there will be a live poll to help county officials identify the priorities of the community.
On July 28, the third virtual community meeting for the Waimea 400 master plan community collaboration was held, and the site’s draft conceptual master plan was presented.
The draft conceptual master plan is an adaptive plan created after careful review of community feedback and discussions with agency and resource partners on the three conceptual-master-plan alternatives that were presented during the second community meeting, according to a county press release.
Instead of a traditional master-plan format with bubbled uses and listed acreages, this adaptive conceptual master plan identifies five zones on the west side of the site, based on anticipated changes to the land and future flooding potential.
Uses that are appropriate for the conditions of each zone are identified, but not specifically placed at this stage to allow for flexibility as the land changes. The east side of the site is less vulnerable to sea-level rise and includes areas for housing, community uses and sports facilities.
Anyone who cannot attend the virtual meeting may access the information and survey on the project website, waimea400.com, until Sept. 17. Also, anyone with comments may contact the county Planning Department at 808-241-4050 or waimea400@gmail.com, or leave written comments in a drop box at the Waimea Public Library, also until Sept. 17.
Registration for the virtual meeting and more information about the adaptive plan is available at waimea400.com.
