Cars come out for show on Father’s Day

LIHU‘E — Richard Aki of Kaua‘i Classic Cars said his ‘55 Chevy truck just got completed and is on the road, pulling up to a parking space at the Kukui Grove Center, Wednesday.

“This is my Daily Driver,” Aki said. “It just got finished and I can also show the car.”

The truck will be part of the fleet of vehicles the Kaua‘i Classic Cars will have on display, Saturday during the Dad’s Day Car Show in the parking lot between Ross Dress for Less, the UPS Store, and the CVS Long’s Drugstore from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The annual car show featuring vintage hot rods, Volkswagens, and classic cars returns as part of the Kukui Grove Center Dad’s Day Celebration after being cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown and stay-at-home recommendations.

There is no admission to view the vehicles on display, although a contribution — nonperishable food, or canned goods, or cash — to the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank will be greatly appreciated. A contribution to KIFB earns the donor an opportunity to earn prizes.

Harvey Maeda of the Kaua‘i Classic Cars is praying the weather clears up because he is planning on having his ‘31 Ford 5-window coupe on exhibit to the music provided by Disc Jockey Richard Rasay for talking story with car owners.

The ‘31 Ford still shows off its Hot August Night entry from Reno, Nevada.

“I was planning on shipping the car,” Maeda said. “But the boat was already leaving so the car stayed home.”

Friday night, Frank Cruz, very popular with the Pau Hana Market crowd, brings Cruz Control to the Food Court stage starting at 6 p.m. to wrap up the week with Aloha Friday.

“Folks have been enjoying Frank’s music at the Monday Pau Hana Market,” said Melissa McFerrin-Warrack of Kukui Grove Center. “This is the first time they are playing on center stage this year.”

Mason Chock brings Da Pali climbing wall back, Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, and on Sunday — Father’s Day — the Kaua‘i Jazz Fourette will be presenting a special concert at the Food Court stage from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
