Get your COVID vaccination now
My wife and I, who are both vaccinated, had two different (but similar) COVID-related experiences while celebrating Mother’s Day.
The first was at a local restaurant during breakfast. We shared a table with a young (20s) couple. Over the course of the meal, it was revealed that they were not vaccinated and, in fact, are not considering COVID vaccination. Their reasoning was that they are young and could easily survive a COVID infection should they be exposed. They also revealed that their parents were not vaccinated and won’t be.
Our second Mother’s Day experience occurred when we arrived at Eating House 1849 for dinner, only to find the eatery closed (temporary closure announced on their website and via announcements on their windows) due to an employee testing positive for COVID.
Both scenarios demonstrate the importance of being vaccinated, not only for one’s protection but for the public’s protection as well.
The young couple’s reasoning for not getting vaccinated shows a total disregard for the possibility of them infecting someone, especially someone who is not as young or as healthy as they are.
The restaurant’s closure demonstrates the results of when an establishment’s employee, most likely not vaccinated, tests positive for COVID.
These two vignettes easily make the case for everyone to be vaccinated and to do their part in making our community safe for everyone, young and not-so-young. The message is simple and direct. Please GET VACCINATED, and as soon as possible. Your health and the health of Kaua‘i depend on it.

Take responsibility for teaching your keiki
Dear Kauaian parents and the support system that you have or need to put in place. It is overdue. If you want your keiki to receive a worthwhile education, then you must take the time to homeschool or otherwise have keiki attend a public online charter school like Myron B. Thompson Academy.
There are no excuses. You are denying the reality of what is now occurring. Even working three jobs, I was able to do this homeschool practice. It used to be that preschool to end elementary school was a great option. But, alas, due to the current circumstances and technology, everyone has grown lazy.
