HONOLULU — AlohaSafe Alert, the free, state-approved COVID-19 exposure-notification app, announced it has rolled out AlohaSafe Exposure Notification Express (EN Express), a new, app-less, exposure-notification app that enables older iPhones, (iPhone 6.0 and below) running iOS version 12.5 and below to be part of the state’s contact-tracing network.
HONOLULU — AlohaSafe Alert, the free, state-approved COVID-19 exposure-notification app, announced it has rolled out AlohaSafe Exposure Notification Express (EN Express), a new, app-less, exposure-notification app that enables older iPhones, (iPhone 6.0 and below) running iOS version 12.5 and below to be part of the state’s contact-tracing network.
EN Express is only available on iPhones. Android users will need to download the Aloha Safe Alert app.
With this update, Hawai‘i becomes only one of four states in the country that have both the app and EN Express enabled. EN Express allows iPhone users to go to their Settings and Exposure Notifications and enable their Exposure Notifications there without having to download the app.
The update is introduced as the AlohaSafe Alert app reached over 187,000 downloads since its introduction statewide in early January.
“This milestone signifies growing consumer momentum for the app, and underscores the fact that each person can have an impact on slowing the spread of COVID-19,” said state Rep. Linda Ichiyama, chair of the House Committee on Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness.
“We are proud to be one of only four states to have the Express Notification, and only one of only 23 states that have an app using the Google Apple Exposure Notification technology,” she said.
Community partners, such as professional surf photographer Zak Noyle and local musicians Anuhea, Jboog, Fia and The Green, have asked their followers to download the app to make Hawai‘i safer for everyone. Even companies like Dominos Hawai‘i are encouraging downloads through a “We Love Pizza and U” social-media campaign.
Based on a study by Oxford University’s Nuffield Department of Medicine and Google Research, exposure-notification technologies like AlohaSafe Alert can help prevent COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations and deaths in Hawaiʻi.
The app was developed through a public-private partnership with state Department of Health, aio Digital and the Hawai‘i Executive Collaborative. It is funded by DOH and donations from the private sector. To download the free app, go to the Google Play or Apple App Store on any iPhone.
