PRINCEVILLE — Shinglefish Kaua‘i Pop-Up Gallery opens in the Princeville Center Shops today with a focus on upcycled, found-object art.
The gallery’s art explores joy, color, sea creatures and life by the shoreline, bringing art, community-building activities and an opportunity for self reflection in the time of COVID.
The grand opening is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All are welcome, masks and social distancing are required. Mike Keawe will be playing music, and the communal space will be open with plenty of open-air seating.
Nicole Gelinas, gallery owner, is from Cape Cod, a hook of a sandbar sitting 60 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. Gelinas paints on weathered shingles that have protected homes from the elements and are reclaimed to find a new life. All of the shingles painted here on Kaua‘i have thus far been salvaged from Sea Lodge at Princeville.
Featured in the gallery along with Gelinas are Sweet MG’s Epoxery, showing a funky, colorful array of acrylic jewelry. Robert Haugland’s pieces are a display of rich colors celebrating scenes from the shoreline, and Sally Joyful creates driftwood art displaying words of love and joy.
Shinglefish will only be open through the end of March. Regular hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
