LIHU‘E — The state Department of Health Kaua‘i District Health Office reported one new case of COVID-19 on Thursday.
Thursday’s case is a child resident. The source of infection is community-acquired. All active cases are in isolation, and one case is hospitalized on O‘ahu. Close contacts are being identified, directed to quarantine and offered testing.
Thursday’s case brings the number of on-island active cases to 13, with 157 cumulative cases. Kaua‘i’s cumulative case count includes 138 confirmed locally, one probable, and 18 positive cases diagnosed elsewhere, as they received their pre-travel test results after arriving on island.
“Kaua‘i’s case numbers have remained lower over the last few days, which is good news,” said Dr. Janet Berreman, DOH Kaua‘i District Health officer.
”However, we continue to see community disease transmission, meaning our new cases have no clear relation to travel and no clear source for infection,” said Berreman.
“This tells us that it is important to remain attentive to safe practices as we go about our holiday
preparations: wear masks,
maintain distance and avoid large gatherings.”
The mayor’s emergency rule 23 is in effect, which sets a temporary moratorium of the Safe Travels program. Under Gov. David Ige’s 17th COVID-19 emergency proclamation, effective Dec. 17 all incoming travelers to Kaua‘i, including mainland, inter-island residents and visitors, are under a mandatory, 10-day quarantine.
The county’s modified-quarantine program remains in place for critical-infrastructure workers, essential medical travel or other special circumstances. To apply for a modified quarantine, visit kauai.gov/COVID-19 and click on the “modified quarantine request” button at the top of the page.

This is not a plague!!! You are being fooled by evil rich people!!! Economic and world health reboot. And when I say world health…not humans…but what the UN calls population control. Get a brain cell, I pray to God people stand up and fight this evil ku.
…looks like about continual 100% recovery rate. Why the drama…?
Thanks Mayor! All “community spread” on Kauai is a direct result of Kawakami nonsensically opening up our island to un-checked tourism this past autumn. Prior to then, Kauai had 0 cases of community spread.
This poor kid’s suffering falls on the Mayor (who couldn’t care less because his own kids are sheltered and receiving the best private-school education and top-tier tax-payer funded health care).
If I were this child’s parents, I’d be very angry and sue the heck out of Kawakami for damages, pain and suffering.
There’s always atleast one. And you sir are one of them. How do you infer the child is suffering from this article. Oooh, right you’re one of those victims who depend on big daddy government to keep them safe and care for them. However so quick to blame them for anything that goes wrong. We had covid back in March. We still have it…free surge testing pcr tests know for not being the most reliable or accurate many false positives. Bigger testing pool more cases will show. Basic common sense, majority of all cases have mild to no symptoms. One death of an 85yo with comorbidities who already was past the average age of death in the us which is 78. 99.97% who test positive have survived. But ya, let’s destroy countless lives to potentially maybe save a couple. Il
Just because he’s positive dosent mean he’s suffering. He prob has very little symptoms or maybe even a false positive test John . Relax
Cmon John. You really think the mayor has complete control in this instance? Its either full on kinetic action akin to how the super ferry was impeded – or we follow state law and leadership, and federal CoVid guidelines and law (regardless of what we felt or could see would happen). The mayor can not do any more than he has without acting completely outside of the law. He cant just say no mo planes. Wish he could have in this instance, but it’s pretty myopic to blame a man that is trying to delicately balance a very precarious scenario with a lot at stake for each and everyone of us. Unfortunately, this situation will ultimately be bad in a ton of ways for many of us. It’s bad for me personally right now as well. I just think that perhaps we should commend the Mayor for being as proactive as possible in one of the oddest times in recent history.
Nonsensical.
By definition, community spread is not due to increased tourism.
No mention of “suffering”.
You would count as a ‘parent’, not ‘parents’ plural. Good luck proving big K caused any “harm”. Yes, detectably angry, but mis-directed.
Wow, oh my gosh, guffaw, chortle, unbelievable, happy, lucky us, only 157 people out of 70,000 people got the flu this year…that must be a record low if ever recorded.
We can be sure that a few thousand more got the flu but their level of Health let them experience the flu without symptoms or so mild of symptoms it was not worth the risk of medical intervention. But then none or mild symptoms are or sensational or news worthy, when in fact Healthy people are news worth.
And in fact those who test positive and without symptoms we should study their diet and lifestyle as well as ages. Something to be learned here.
The thrust of medical care is disease not Health, as Health does not sell prescription or over the counter drugs. it’s all about the 4.4 Billion prescription drug sales per year with doctors as middle men and women for the. pharmaceutical cartel.
We could use a reporting center for those positive and none or mild or moderate symptoms to. report in even anonymously in order to get Health info from them. Maybe an online questionnaire to develop Health Statistics instead of only disease statistics.
1st question? How many among you on Kauai do not take any prescription drugs at all.
2nd question? How many among you on Kauai take prescription drugs every day or how many days a week?
3rd question? How many doses of all combined drugs do you take in a whole day?
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
10.
15.
20. ?
This would help to understand who are at risk and reflect on how many diseases people have.
This would be all anonymous…no fear, only Health Enlightenment.
It would be interesting if you did not take any medications or prescription drugs but got well by diet and lifestyle, not DIETING, BUT ABOUT FOOD and DRINKS INTAKE…! ! !
Aloha Mayor..
Afta the front liners get vaccinated..
give all da people that work in tourist industry the vaccine shot.. den no need be scared to service tourist and all businesses can open up!
