Beth Tokioka ordered to-go lunches from the neighboring Anahola Marketplace (she didn’t realize they supply some of the health-food stores), and Dennis Neves took time off his volunteering to attend the celebration (Kaua‘i-based businesses will get bid awards for the $9 million project). What an awesome demonstration of keeping the money at home.
This is a badly-needed shot for the island’s economic recovery from the pandemic.
Moving along, Santa and Mrs. Claus make their appearance in the Santa Bubble at this weekend’s Festival of Lights (it turns on around 6 p.m. nightly at the Historic County Building on Rice Street in Lihu‘e.
And because today is the first Friday in December, Dr. Addison Bulosan said the bands start playing at 6 p.m. at The Specific (chiropractor) offices for the virtual Lights on Rice parade. Ho‘ike Community Television is working with the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i (is there going to be an Old Sugar Mill Run?) to offer a collection from previous years’ Lights on Rice parades and related festivities.
Santa is also figuring how to be safe from the COVID-19 at Kukui Grove Center (where is Candy Cane Lane?), and over in Waimea, the lights have been turned on with no fanfare because of the pandemic. Now, who’s going to vote for this year’s winners with no Waimea Christmas Lighted Parade?
