New case appears to be acquired

LIHU‘E — The state Department of Health Kaua‘i District Health Office reported one new case of COVID-19 on Thursday.
The case is an adult male resident. This case remains under investigation but appears to be community-acquired. All active cases are in isolation and one case is hospitalized. Close contacts are being identified, directed to quarantine and offered testing.
Thursday’s case brings the number of on-island active cases to 16, with 138 cumulative cases. Kaua‘i’s cumulative case count includes 121 confirmed locally, one probable, and 16 positive cases diagnosed elsewhere, as they received their positive pre-travel test results after arriving on island.
Mayor Derek Kawakami’s emergency rule 23 is in effect, which sets a temporary moratorium of the Safe Travels program. Under this rule, effective Dec. 2, all incoming travelers, including mainland, interisland residents and visitors,are under a 14-day, mandatory quarantine.
The county’s modified quarantine program remains in place for critical infrastructure workers, essential medical travel, or other special circumstances. The Garden Island
Wow, 1 new case ! Can you believe it ?!? That’s like the mainland having 5.000 new cases in a day. And we have a 1.6 new case average over the last seven days. Oh NO ! And 1 hospitalization. That’s almost 2% of Kauai’s hospital capacity just being used for Covid ! Quick, shut down the evil tourist industry. Who cares about people having to make a living, we’re all going to die anyway. (Lot’s of sarcasm intended)
So you’re complaining that the restrictions are working?
Let’s make something very clear: up until just a few months ago, there was no such thing as “community spread” on Kauai throughout the entire Covid crisis. It was not until Kawakami and Ige nonsensically decided to let in untested tourists and travelers this past autumn that the virus started leaking into our community. Therefore, by default, all Covid cases in Kauai originated with an infected non-local, and could have been completely avoided had our “leaders” actually done their job and protected their own citizens instead of helping their buddies in Big Tourism make a few extra bucks.
You have no clue on what BS the tourists go through to visit this island. Returning residents are the ones that did the spread. Sure,……they are going to quarantine for 14 days after arrival. Complete BS.
Tourists are in incarceration hotels if they don’t have a negative test result or land without any results.
The Mayor is not thinking of his people with a survival rate of 99%…….it is all about the perception of protecting the elderly, as those under 70, have a much higher chance of being killed on the 2 lane, joke of a highway, we have on this island. The county workers “working remotely” (what a joke) will all get their full pay, while the suckers pay increased property taxes, increased car registration rates, increased car inspection rates, and probably a higher GET next year to stay home and watch NETFLIX. SMH.

The reason there is still spread, Mayor Derek, is because the eyes are a verified, and obviously, a vírus portal of entry…and minor disease Pink Eye is infectious and contagious and a VIRUS. Why not Covid19 virus in your eyes. How could our doctors and Health Dept forget this?

I am curious why the Garden Island did not pick up the story of the married couples who were arrested for flying while knowingly Positive for COVID-19. The story says they were arrested and after posting bail they were released. So they were released into the community and are probably in some beach and going about in grocery stores and other public places.
Its now obvious to me that no one is policing from departure airports. Above all San Francisco is obviously satisfied to get rid of COVID POSITIVE people as the city is grappling with the issue of surge in COVID infections. No one knows how many people these couples have potentially infected while at the airport terminal and during flight. These people had the audacity to travel while knowing they were COVID Positive. Now that they are home, do you really think they will follow quarantine rules?

Let’s not let a good crisis go to waste. Those 2 who tested positive were on and around travelers in the plane. So let’s monitor everyone on the flight to see how many people were infected from those 2 people? The perfect accidental experiment!!
@Jae – the couple’s names were Wesley Moribe and Courtney Peterson. They live in Wailua. They went on a friggin vacation to Cabo of all places, caught the virus there, then KNOWINGLY got back on a plane to Lihue. KPD only fined them $1000, which makes me think they have friends in the department. Garden Island did pick up the story, as have other media outlets like CNN. But surprisingly, there’s not much outrage from the Kauai community. The sheer number of travelers who they most likely infected along the way, plus all the Kauai residents they are now coming into contact with, is definitely going to result in at least a few deaths. But privileged anti-mask MAGA morons don’t really care about things like that.
